Reader Question.

200906302314.jpg

I got this question from a reader the other day and I thought I’d post it up to see if anyone has any opinions/advice.

“Curious if anyone has had one of these stolen yet? I’d love to get one, but just the attention that they get while your on it makes me terrified about the attention it would get locked up. I mean, don’t get me wrong, I’ll have it chained to my leg, but any tips on keeping one of these guys not stolen for those rare moments that it does have to be locked up? I would -hate- to do it, but the wheels are definitely the “loudest” part of that bike. Are there any less loud wheels you’d recommend or post up for review? Thanks! -Ken”

I’ve had mine for a couple of months now and lock it up for extended periods without worry. It’s been parked at the bar, gym, etc. in some sketchy areas for hours at varying times of day and night without issue. The comment I get most is that the bike is distinctive. For the moment there’s not that many out there. If mine got jacked, my posse would be able to easily identify it. Of course they probably would actually do anything about it. HA! Get a good lock and your mind will be at ease. If it does get ripped off, well it’s only money so just buy another.

I park my District inside only, and when I’m out getting a coffee I park it without a lock but within sight. Burglar psychology makes me believe they’d rather go for a bike that doesn’t attract this much attention ;)

There are few important ways to safeguard your bike. First, there are no substitutes for a good lock, so buy the best. Second, visible location (thieves don’t want to be observed by 28 different people as they try to steal). Third, areas where other good bikes are locked up allows for a would-be thief to select other bikes to steal (all things relative, thieves select the easiest mark). Fourth, if you live in a city of 6 million+, then you’ll just have to accept that risks will always be higher. Good luck!

Mine was just stolen hours ago! Locked to a parking sign. Thieves climbed the sign and cut off it off. Lifted my bike right off.
