Trek District

Availablility?

Trek District

With all the buzz that is out there about the District, there seems to be a little discrepancy about the actual delivery date. At this point, there are just a handful in existence. I hope to be getting my hands on one soon for a little demo. Unfortunately when it comes to actually buying one, it doesn’t look like they are going to be available by November like some of the first reports state. With the new belt drive system, there are some extra details to work out to get the bike into full production. Some of the bike shops I have talked to lately say that they don’t expect it until February or March of 09. I did however have a chance to talk with Trek on the phone the other day, and they mentioned that they hoped to have the first ones coming out of production in December 08. They did mention that the numbers would be limited so many people wouldn’t see them in their LBS until early 09.

Thanks for collating more info on the bike. I’ve ordered one through Evan’s Cycles here in London, hoping to get my hands on it as soon as I can, so it’s a shame to hear that it might be delayed. I certainly haven’t heard anything from Evan’s regarding any dates other than 15th of November, give or take a week. If I get more info I’l let you know

Dale, Let us know what you find out. The latest I’ve heard from Trek (as of this morning) is that they won’t be available until end of december. Hopefully I’m wrong.

Oh that’s a shame. Can’t wait to get riding it around London, if I go out on my road bike it’s just too easy a target to steal, I like the simplicity of single speed, and as soon as I saw bikes were starting to use the Gates drive I wanted one. There’s also a great concept fixie from Fixie INC. A Gates drive fixie with wooden deep rims and wooden bars. Very cool

Thanks for creating this website. In all the pics the crank arm seems to be attached to the display stand. I would assume that prohibited anyone from turning the crank arms to see how the belt functioned. Has anyone (besides Trek employees) ridden this bike? Any media person been allowed to ride this bike? Gates says on their web site that the belt will not slip – I hope that is accurate. Bridgestone has been selling belt drive commuter bikes in Japan since 1988 – their bike has a belt tensioning device built into the the front cog. Can the Trek bike work without a belt tensioning system? And by “tensioning system,” I am referring to a device that takes up the slack in the belt once you start pedalling, not some device that holds the rear axle in a fixed position. I am pulling for the Trek District – I hope it makes it into production. It’s about time the bicycle drive train moved into the 21st century.

I have similar questions about tensioning the belt, I don’t see a “tensioner” anywhere when I read about the Gates Carbon…I do see some info on their site suggesting that tension is VERY important, also, checked out the Spot brand singles, they all appear to have Spot brand “Pull Tabs” and dropouts that stiffen up the break necessary to slide the Belt through the frame? I guess old school track dropouts have adjusters in there but no break to get the belt through. I am optimistic and look forward to someday riding a single speed belt drive 29er mtb.

Good luck, Dale! I hope Santa puts your District under the tree! Anxious to hear your report on the bike and specifically the performance of the belt drive. I can not get any dealers here in Texas to give me a delivery date. Maybe in ’09.

Good luck needed i think. i just went to my local evans and they said the Districts wont get to their warehouse until January 5th, then another week on that to get to store, so mid january at the earliest. Already reserved mine!

    Dale says:

Yeah that seems a more realistic response frankly. I’m not expecting it before around then.

Finally got a delivery date today from a local Trek dealer here in Dallas, TX. They said March. Hopefully they meant March 2009!

I attended Backstage 08 (before Trekworld) and saw the District there. I also got to ride a Madone that they had build with the belt system as a demo model. It was sweet (one might indeed say ninja quiet).

The most interesting part, however, was talking with Chad Price, the Product Manager for the Trek lifestyle line. The most revealing thing he said about availability: “I don’t care if we sell a single one of these, the press we’ll get will be worth it.”

I think they underestimated demand – I have several on backorder for people and haven’t been given confidence from my Trek reps that they’ll show in any kind of timely fashion – probably early March, which sucks.

Trek needs to learn to back their press a bit better. It’s been the same for every highly anticipated product they’ve put out for years.

    Dale says:

That’s a shame, the latest from Evan’s cycles here in London is that 56cm & 58cm frames will show around January 5th, and my 54cm around the end of January but I don’t put a lot of faith in that at this stage considering the original November 15th ship date.

…still, I’m looking forward to it, and it’s mainly for the coming Spring anyway.

I have had mine on backorder since I got home from trek world. The ETA has been pushed back yet again, as our Trek dealer site shows March 31 as the delivery date. It may get pushed back again, so I’m not holding my breath until it actually shows up.

I was looking at the delivery time on treks dealer page at work today and it got pushed back to 4/6/09!!! When I first put it on back order it was March 9 delivery but have been watching the days get pushed back. I am more excited about waiting for this bike than I was my Project One Madone 6.5 that took over a month to paint and ship.

    Graham says:

April 16th as of Jan 20. Hope it won’t get pushed back again, Mid-April will be nice to alleviate the Tax Bill Depression.

Interestingly, although I paid in full for mine the price at Evans has gone up £200. I’ve not been informed if my order remains as it was. Very curious to see what will happen there. But considering that I purchased it in October, I’d hope the honour the listing as it stood…

But if that means more delays…I’d pay the £200 to get it faster! ;)

  21. January 26th, 2009 at 11:54 am

    Dale says:

Turns out I’m in luck on the price. They’re honouring the original price. Availability for middle of February apparently
